My First Trunk Show!

Back in October, I had the first ever Twenty Thou trunk show. I had it at the best Jamaican restaurant in Chicago, Jamaica Jerk.  I was so nervous, I think I invited maybe about 36 people.  I was worried no one would show up LOL.  I did lots of googling to figure out how to display my items.  I ended up hitting the Salvation Army, and found several CD racks for a couple dollars a piece, to display my earrings, and I found this awesome bronze bowl to put stuff in too.  About a year before the show I moved, and sold all of my CDs, and gave away my CD racks which were very similar to the ones I purchased, this is why I’m a pack rat, when I throw stuff away I end up needing it later.  I even did a practice run at home LOL.

I arrived at Jamaica Jerk a couple hours before the show to set up everything, that went fine until I got ready to hang up the necklaces.  Like an idiot I somehow packed them all together, so they were a big ball LOL.  It took me at least an hour to get those necklaces apart, I eventually had to cut a couple of the ribbon necklaces to get them all apart.  (Unfortunately I didn’t learn my lesson, I did a craft show about a month later and the same thing happened, that time I had tried to pack them separate, but they still ended up getting tangled.)  I’ve learned my lesson now (finally) and now pack them in snack baggies.  I made my necklace display out of copper pipe, copper T joints, and copper elbow joints I bought at Home Depot.  They really are all about “You can build it, we can help”.  I found the pipes and asked one of the sales associates if they cut pipe, he was like no but you can.  So he showed me how to use a pipe cutter.  Now I kinda want one, in case I want to make something pipe related.  I think I have enough hobbies for now though.

About 15 people showed up, all of my buddies, and one friend of the owner of Jamaica Jerk. I even discovered a new wine, thanks to Mona, my wine rep.  I’m not much of a wine person unless it’s sweet, and she had one their called Blufeld.  So if you like sweet wines, this one is pretty good.

Intergalactic Bead Show Review and Finds

Remember Gus Gus from Cinderella lol.  Oooooo beads!  That’s how I feel when I go to bead shows.  This is my third one, I went on July 9th, to the Intergalactic Bead Show, at White Eagle Banquets in Niles. My strategy is to walk around first to price things and figure out what I’m going to purchase, and then I go back through and do the shopping.  This time when I went I had the bright idea to take pictures with my phone of the stuff I want so that I can go back through and identify where things were and not forget something, if you read my last blog post you’ll know my must haves were citrine and pyrite.  It’s interesting that multiple people have the same or similar beads, but the prices are different, that’s another reason why I walk around first.

Here’s pictures of the show.

So many shiny goodies.

Even more shiny goodies.

Table after table, row after row of all type of glass, semi precious stones, and metals.

Ooo what are they buying?

I love copper, got a few of these.

The beaded wood necklace pile, didn't find anything in there I wanted, I'd just take them apart for the beads anyways, I have may beads similar to these already though.

Glass beads and some gemstones.

Nice metal filigree beads and other shapes. Didn't end up with any of these, maybe next time.

I love these wood skulls, they were a bit pricey though, maybe next time.

Not sure what these are but they would have made sweet earrings, another next time purchase, I needed a bigger budget lol.

I liked the leaves but was worried that since the price was so low they may change colors, I try to avoid that.

Love these crystals, these will be another next time purchase.

And now for the goodies I did buy!

Beautiful agate in various colors, one of my favorite stones, right after hematite, and then pyrite.

Some brass and copper accents.

Copper beads in different shapes and copper tubing.

Tiny yellow turquoise cubes and carnelian cylinders.

Show

And I managed to get what I came from, some faceted citrine rondelles, and pyrite chunks.

Couple different glass beads I got too, these will make great spacers.

I didn't get these at the show but bought it around the same time, perfect for some cute tassel earrings.

Well hope you enjoyed my recap, I’ll have to update you with the things I’ve made from all my goodies!

Winter Escapade Fashion Show

I recently started and caught up on the first two seasons of  The A-List New York, hilariously dramatic show. When I started watching I was so jealous, their lives were so fabulous, going to all the latest fashion shows, parties, etc.    Although they are slaves to beauty, and I have a zero-tolerance pain policy when it comes to beauty, so I was like yeah never going to be them, no one is going to be sticking a needle in my face to get rid of a wrinkle, or ripping the hair off my body.  But as for the parties and fashion shows, I welcome them.  Thankfully my friends Belinda Common, Michelle Smith, Gail Avery & Erika Degraffinreaidt put on the Winter Escapade fashion show on November 12th at the Beauty Bar and invited me to participate.  The other designers had some amazing clothes, I can’t wait to make more money so I can afford to buy them.  The other designers were O’Ron Manson, Maggie Dianovsky, Lorene Skipper,  and K. Marie Designs.

Winter Escapade - November 12, 2011

This was my first fashion show, I had no idea what I was doing lol.  Luckily we had a dress rehearsal the night before.  And again I took a ton of pics until my phone died, as usual.  I need to get a backup battery.  The space we rehearsed in was GINORMOUS, I wanted to move in.  The models were all fantastic, and friendly, and rocked the hell out of my infinity and noodle scarves. I apologize in advance for the blurriness. Check it out:

The black and white houndstooth infinity scarves work for both men and women. And the grey and purple infinity scarf can be worn many different ways.

Belinda coaching the models.

I had no idea what having things in a fashion show entailed, the models kept asking me how did I want the scarves worn, or if there was a certain way I wanted them to walk, or manipulate the scarves.  LOL.  I was like um…I have no idea, I just made them.  So in the future I’ll know to put more thought into that, luckily Belinda, Erika, Michelle, and Gail knew what they were doing, and helped me give them better guidance.  I was a little better at the actual show, but not by much lol.  All in all I had a blast, they picked excellent models who were so nice and professional, nothing like the ones portrayed on television lol.  There were no divas or crazy people :).

I got a few pictures behind the scenes at the show, and fortunately the wonderful Andre Johnson was there to take pictures also.  The only problem with being in the fashion show is that you don’t get to see the other designer’s showcase their garments other than a few glimpses here in there because you’re prepping your own stuff.  We even had a Project Runway type crisis where one model was late, but managed to get there just in time. At one point one of the models after the first designer’s runway walk, disappeared all together, I didn’t see him for the rest of the night, I was like um, what happened to that one guy (I still don’t know his name).  I later found out he had a family emergency and had to leave, I hope everything was okay I felt like I was in a spinoff of Project Runway meets America’s Next Top Model lol. So enough of my rambling here, take a look:

Shop Jarvis Square Recap

I was fortunate enough to participate in the Shop Jarvis Square Artisan Market event on December 10th this year.  They’ve been doing it for years, I don’t know how I’ve missed it in the past, I would have definitely been shopping.  But this year I noticed the posters and was like hey, I live on Jarvis, I want to participate. So I hunted down the organizer just in time she still had a few slots left.  I was located in the rear of Charmers Cafe/ Dagel & Beli along with four other talented artists.  There were more artisans in the Poitin Stil bar next door too.  I sold 18 items which brings me up to 161 sales!  Only 19,839 to go!  Here’s my setup:

Do you like my DIY Copper Pipe Necklace Stand?

I even ended up bartering my orange sweater infinity scarf for this sweet pair of earrings by Tania Rodamilans. She also had some beautiful paintings you can see on her website.

Jenn Cooper & Cindy Pacyk were there offering their adorable sock monsters up for adoption.  I want one! They even had Siamese monsters!

I definitely need to get out more – Topshop Olivia Palermo Event

For all of my readers I apologize for my long hiatus, I’m back on the grind now, and have lots of stuff to share with you.  Had a great time last night at Topshop Chicago.

And here we are:

Olivia Palermo & I

Olivia Palermo & I, check out my Twenty Thou Infinity Scarf, very warm, more on those coming soon.

Olivia Palermo, socialite/actress from MTV’s The City, turned stylist, was there styling models with the lovely clothes and jewelry from Topshop. Check out these outfits:

I love their shoes, but I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t last more than the five minutes it takes to get from my chair to my front door before I was like, nope not gonna make it lol. These ladies were troopers, they stood for at least two hours in those shoes.

Loved that bustier on the model on the right, and the chained dress on the one on the left, hated the crushed green skirt,  eventually she pulled the skirt up so that it was even with the chained dress and then later it was even higher, looked much better that way.  I want that fringe purse too, I have the perfect earrings to go with it:

Fringylicious! Fringe & Leather Earrings. Measuring in at just under 8" these long black fringe earrings trimmed are trimmed with genuine black leather. They'll definitely turn some heads.

The had complimentary hair makeovers, manicures, and makeup artists there.  I had my nails done by Astro Wifey, aren’t they cute:

Also had my make up done by Makeup by Jaycie.

The stylists were from Kelly Cardenas Salon, I was tempted to get my hair done, but didn’t know if they’d know what to do with my locs and didn’t feel like finding out lol, my grown self is still “tenderheaded” so it would have probably been painful, I’ll do my hair tomorrow myself, it’s about that time.

So as I said in the title I need to get out more, I look forward to the next events.  If you want more in depth fashion coverage check out my friend Nicole’s blog Ooh, Eye Like It.  She has lots more pictures.  I think I may have been looking at the wrong things in there, instead of the ankle snapping shoes, I was really ogling their chairs, I think they’d look lovely with my table, this one was taken by Nicole.

I’m going to the Chicago Intergalactic Bead Show!

I’m so excited, I got free tickets to the Chicago Intergalactic Bead Show, a bit of a misnomer since it’s in Niles, IL and not Chicago, but hey close enough. It’s running from July 9th to the 10th from 10am – 5pm.  I’ll probably go on Sunday.  I went on Superbowl Sunday earlier this year. Yes, I missed the game to go look at beads. The Bears weren’t in the game anyways. I’m looking forward to getting some pyrite nuggets.

Pyrite Nuggets

Pyrite Nuggets, aren't they beautiful

I have a vision of fool’s gold and copper earrings. Didn’t have enough in my bead budget to get them last time, but they’ll be first on my list this time. Hopefully I have enough for some citrine, I love that orange jewel.

Citrine

Doesn't it look juicy?

I wonder if Ayla’s Originals International Bead Bazaar will be there, they had these awesome Carl Clasmeyer clasps there last time, they’re adorable, and so unique. Doesn’t his name sound like he would make clasps? Check him out:

Tweet me if you’ll be at the show @twentythou, it was a blast last time. Be nice to meet some more folks that share in my bead obsession. I actually got a “Hell No” from a friend when I asked him if he’d like to go to the Intergalactic Bead Show, lol. Images of my current collection and the restoration process of my letterpress cabinet turned beadkeeper saga coming up next.
